The Sherbrooke Historical Society was founded on March 2, 1927, under the name of the Eastern Townships Historical Society. From its beginnings, the Historical Society has had a double vocation: the preservation of local and regional heritage and circulation of the history of Sherbrooke and the Eastern Townships.
On April 17, 1989, the Eastern Townships Historical Society became the Sherbrooke Historical Society, presenting the history of Sherbrooke and the Eastern Townships to the general public. It developed a theme to focus its activities: settlement in the Eastern Townships.
The Sherbrooke Historical Society received accreditation as a Private Archive Service from the Archives nationales du Québec in August 1990. The mission of this department is to preserve and complete archival collections, and to make them accessible to the public and researchers.
Today, the Sherbrooke Historical Society can be considered the most important historical society in the region and one of the largest historical societies in Quebec.
Since May 1992, the Sherbrooke Historical Society has been housed at the Centre d’interprétation de l’histoire de Sherbrooke, which belongs to the City of Sherbrooke. It receives financial support from its members, the City of Sherbrooke, the Ministère de la Culture, de la Communication et de la Condition feminine, and the Bibliothèque et Archives Nationales du Québec.
